June 9, 2020 Mathieu Stevenson

Snagajob is here to help you navigate the hourly hiring landscape during this pandemic. Our proprietary data gives us a unique perspective on hourly job trends and we can see how both workers and employers are responding in real-time. One of the most valuable things we can offer you is a view into these insights and hiring trends. We’re here to give you helpful context as you make business decisions and begin to reopen.

Highlights

As employers start to post jobs and hire workers back, there’s a lot to consider. Take a look at our weekly survey data to see how workers are feeling about finding jobs, as well as their feedback on inequality and racism. And as you think about restaffing your business, now is a great time to revisit your hiring process to make sure it’s inclusive and unbiased.

Even as enthusiasm for last week’s Bureau of Labor Statistics’ positive jobs report was tempered with a glitch in the data, there’s still good news in hourly hiring.

Things are improving. Overall jobs are still down 36% since the beginning of March, but up 11% in June.

Jobs

All industry data is from 3/2/20-6/9/20

Where are the jobs?

Retail jobs are up 9% in June, cutting into the massive 42% industry-wide job loss due to COVID-19.

Warehouse and logistics jobs saw huge gains during the height of the pandemic, peaking at +803% in early May. But they’re returning back to normal, now up 25% from pre-pandemic levels.

Grocery jobs are still up 35% since COVID-19 hit, but down 3% in June, indicating that consumers have stopped panicking.

Sit-down restaurant jobs are coming back slowly as consumers are excited to enjoy a meal out after months of staying home. They’re down 53% overall, but up 4% in June.

What’s happening across America

All state data is from 3/2/20-6/9/20

Americans are ready to get out of the house, but they aren’t ready to get on a plane. In what travel experts are calling “the summer of the road trip,” jobs are up in classic road trip destinations.

Charleston, SC Retail jobs are up 17% since March. Dining jobs are returning to pre-coronavirus levels, with full service restaurant jobs only down 19% and quick service restaurants only down 7%.

Ann Arbor, MI Hospitality and retail jobs are back to pre-pandemic levels. Warehouse and logistics jobs are up 425%.

Las Vegas, NV Hospitality jobs are still down 56% since early March, but recovering from their pandemic low of -89%. Retail is up 22%.

Workers

Searches for part-time jobs are headed back up. They’re still down 22% since early March, but have increased 19% in June.

The bottom line

Progress is slow, but it’s positive. Jobs, and even searches for jobs, are starting to tick up as Americans get out of the house this summer.

As always, we continue to talk to hourly workers and employers to see how they’re feeling about the situation. You can find that information in our weekly COVID-19 infographic.
