Highlights

 

As we all come to terms with life in a pandemic, jobs are coming back—up 5% since last week, up 23% in the last month and only down 11% from pre-pandemic levels in early March.

 

This week also marks the end of the extra $600 per week federal government payment for out-of-work Americans.  This has been a significant financial contribution that has allowed people to stay home and without it, millions of people will be looking for jobs in the days and weeks to come. We anticipate a second stimulus package in the days to come, yet the uncertainty of what it will entail leaves workers in limbo and focused on their finances. According to our survey data:

  • 77% of unemployed workers are concerned about the CARES Act additional unemployment benefits ending
  • 61% of workers receiving unemployment are anticipating and planning on an extension of the CARES Act unemployment benefits

Jobs

 

All industry data is from 3/2/20-7/21/20

 

Here are the latest job numbers by industry:

 

Quick service restaurant (QSR) jobs are down 1% week over week, down 4% month over month and down 27% since early March.

 

Sit-down restaurant jobs are down 3% week over week, down 2% month over month and down 49% since early March.

 

Warehouse and logistics jobs are up 193% week over week, up 351% month over month and up 546% since early March.

 

Retail jobs are up 1% week over week, up 31% month over month and down 11% since early March.

 

Grocery jobs are up 3% week over week, down 5% month over month and up 16% since early March.

 

Hospitality jobs are up 3% week over week, up 19% month over month and down 52% since early March.

 

On demand jobs are up 8% week over week, up 40% month over month and down 22% since early March.

 

Convenience store jobs are flat week over week, up 11% month over month and down 14% since early March.

 

Healthcare jobs are up 1% week over week, up 6% month over month and up 13% since early March.

What’s happening across America

Where COVID-19 cases are declining

Vermont: In Burlington, retail jobs are up 22% week over week, up 56% since early March. Restaurant jobs are up 6% week over week, down 59% since early March. Warehouse and logistics jobs are flat week over week, up 67% since early March.

 

Where COVID-19 cases are holding steady

New York: In New York City, retail jobs are flat week over week and back to pre-pandemic levels. On demand jobs are up 8% week over week, down 42% since early March. Hospitality jobs are down 2% week over week, down 61% since early March. Grocery jobs are down 17% week over week, up 178% since early March.

 

Where COVID-19 cases are rising

Washington, DC: Hospitality jobs are up 15% week over week, down 53% since early March. Sit-down restaurant jobs are down 3% week over week, down 48% since early March. Retail jobs are flat week over week, down 46% since early March. Convenience store jobs are down 5% week over week, down 30% since early March.

 

Arizona: In Phoenix, sit-down restaurant jobs are down 3% week over week, down 41% since early March. Retail jobs are down 2% week over week, down 47% since early March. Grocery jobs are up 26% week over week, up 23% since early March. On demand jobs are down 8%, down 47% since early March.

 

Nevada: In Las Vegas, retail jobs are down 6% week over week, down 13% since early March. Hospitality jobs are flat week over week, down 78% since early March. Sit-down restaurant jobs are down 4% week over week, down 58% since early March.

 

Workers

 

Google searches for part-time jobs are up 11% week over week, down 19% month over month and down 25% since early March.

The bottom line

 

Jobs are almost back to their pre-pandemic levels, which is good news for the economy. There are jobs to be had for the millions of hourly workers waiting to hear the specifics of the second stimulus and extended unemployment benefits.
